Zone 1: Tip & Wings

Zone 1: Tip & Wings [0.08–0.12 mm]

Controlled between 0.08 and 0.12mm. Directly governs tongue articulation speed and pianissimo (pp) entry sensitivity. Scrape gently toward the outer corners.

DIAGNOSTIC CLINIC // 3 SCRAPING PROTOCOLSCLICK PROTOCOL TO FOCUS
A

Excessive Resistance & Delayed Attack

HIGH RESISTANCE

Requires excessive air pressure on attacks; pianissimo (pp) entry hesitates or crows sharp (C#).

SCRAPING PRESCRIPTION:

Use plaque and knife tip to thin only the outer Tip Wings by 0.01–0.02mm without touching the central spine; if still heavy, blend lateral edges of the Heart.

B

Sagging High Register & Flat Pitch

FLAT REGISTER

Upper register notes (A5–F6) sag flat; harmonic focus collapses under forte wind pressure.

SCRAPING PRESCRIPTION:

Clip 0.2–0.3mm off the very tip on the chopping block, then re-profile only the front 0.5mm crescent to restore Heart support.

C

Wild Low Notes & Harsh Sub-Register

WILD LOW REGISTER

Low Bb3 to D4 barks or honks roughly on entry; impossible to execute a smooth diminuendo.

SCRAPING PRESCRIPTION:

Lightly scrape the back third of Zone 4 (Side Channels) to release low-frequency damping while preserving outer rails.

Reed Soaking Protocol: Warm Water vs. Saliva Enzyme Decay

REED CARE

Always soak oboe reeds in 30°C–35°C clean water. Saliva contains amylase enzymes that break down Arundo donax cellulose fibers, cutting reed lifespan in half and damping upper overtones.

Winter Heating / Dry Stage (RH < 35%)Dip to thread, remove excess water, let rest 2 min before playing
90–120 s
Standard Concert Hall (RH 40%–60%)Soak only the cane blades; avoid soaking cork to prevent swelling
45–60 s
Humid Summer / Warmed-Up Reed (RH > 65%)Over-soaking (>3 min) causes waterlogging and stiff, sharp response
15–30 s

Interactive Reed Crow Triage: C4+C5 Octave Diagnostics

CROW TEST

Before mounting the reed on the oboe, place your lips just above the thread and blow freely. A balanced reed produces a vibrant C4 + C5 double-octave "crow". Click below to audition all 3 diagnostic states:

1. Balanced C4+C5 Double-Octave Crow (Ideal)Diagnosis: Tip and Heart are in equilibrium. Ready for concert stage.
2. Tight High Squeak C#5 / D5 (No Low Octave)Rx: Reed too heavy -> Scrape Tip Wings and back Side Channels.
3. Flat Loose Rattle B3 / Bb3 (Over-Scraped Heart)Rx: Weak heart support -> Clip 0.2mm off the tip on chopping block.
5-Zone Micrometer Thickness StandardEvery tradition specifies wet dial-indicator measurements across Tip, Heart, Spine, and Side Channels.
Staple Cone & Bore Impedance MatchingNarrow French bores (Lorée) pair best with #2/Stevens staples; wider bores (Marigaux) match #2+/Guercio.
Three Wet-Dry Aging CyclesNever finish a reed on day one: cycle through three wet-dry rests so cane fibers stabilize before final tip finishing.
